Who has migraines?

If you suffer from migraine headaches, you’re not alone. Migraines affect men and women from all walks of life, all ages, and all income levels. More specifically:
• 28 million Americans are afflicted
• Including 21 million women and more than 7 million men
• This translates into 1 in every 4 households
• Kids and older adults can be affected, but the peak age is 25-55 years of age

What is a migraine headache?

If you have severe episodic headaches that last 4-72 hours, chances are likely that you suffer from migraines. But there are specific symptoms medical professionals look for to confirm medical diagnosis. Symptoms must include at least TWO of the following:
• Unilateral pain (one-sided)
• Throbbing
• Worsened by movement
• Moderate or severe pain

And include at least ONE of the following:
• Nausea or vomiting (less than 30% of patients)
• Photophobia and phonophobia (sensitivity to light and sound)

What’s my first step?

First of all, your physician at SPS will sit down with you and walk you through the entire process. It starts with a patient history and an extensive patient diary to fully understand your pain and provide the best treatment options available. Summit Plastic Surgery may also confer with other physicians (i.e. neurologists, family physicians, etc.) to help manage migraine headaches.

Who May Be Helped?

Patients with migraine headaches that are not well controlled with medication or those who cannot tolerate their migraine headache medications may be good candidates for migraine headache surgery. An extensive migraine headache diary is kept by the patient for several weeks. Once reviewed, the patient may qualify for a Botox trial. The Botox trial helps determine if surgical therapy may be effective. A good response to the Botox with headache relief or significant improvement indicates that you may benefit from migraine headache surgery.

What should I expect during my surgical treatment?

The surgical procedure will be done as an outpatient procedure under sedation or general anesthesia, at Southwest Surgical Suites, Summit Plastic Surgery’s private outpatient surgical center. The surgery can involve modifying muscles and nerves around the face and scalp, as well as some intranasal (inside the nose) structures. These structures are called trigger points. It is the elimination of trigger points that helps reduce migraines. The surgical incisions are relatively small and hidden in and around the hairline. Recovery from surgery usually takes one to three weeks. A postoperative diary is done to evaluate the effectiveness of the surgery. What are the side effects of surgery? As with any type of surgery, there are risks. Migraine surgery risks include, but are not limited to, infection, bleeding, numbness, poor wound healing, and some temporary or permanent hair loss. There is no guarantee of results, but studies demonstrate that migraine surgery patients can gain significant relief from their migraines.
